La Compagnie launches business class-only flights between London and New York Flying from London Luton to Newark International, La Compagnie’s new business class-only flights promise to revolutionise the market.
Revolution in business class travel
The recently launched French business-class-only airline La Compagnie is to launch a direct service from London to New York at the end of April, with a limited number of launch fares costing £649 return per person, or £1,007 per couple booking together, and regular fares costing from £1,549 return – all prices that are unparalleled on this route.
Flights will depart from London Luton Airport and land at Newark International. Flying on a Boeing 757-200, customers will be allocated one of 74 fully lie-flat seats set in a 2×2 configuration – aircraft of this size usually accommodate about 235 passengers. Menus will be devised by French chef Christophe Langrée, who has previously been in service at Hotel Matignon, the residence of France’s prime minister.
Amenity kits will be provided by French cosmetics brand Caudalie, and cabin crew uniforms are provided by French fashion house Vicomte A – women’s uniforms feature culotte shorts rather than skirts or trousers. There will be just three cabin crew servicing passengers, and the company will maintain a base in London and expects most of the staff on this route to be British nationals. For in-flight entertainment, each passenger will be allocated a Samsung tablet preloaded with films, music, TV shows and books. Lounge facilities will be provided for passengers departing from both destinations.
La Compagnie already operates business-class-only flights between Paris and New York, which commenced service last summer. The airline was launched in October 2013 by L’Avion founder Frantz Yvelin with assistance from former Swissair and JetAirways COO Peter Luethi.
The failed airlines Eos, MaxJet and Silverjet have all previously offered business-class-only services between Britain and the US, but La Compagnie’s arrival to these shores is preceded by British Airways’ enduringly well-regarded twice-daily business-class-only service from London City Airport to New York’s JFK, which recently celebrated five years of operation. That service seats just 32 passengers on Airbus A318 aircraft and return flights begin at a touch above £2,500.
It is expected that La Compagnie’s main clientele will be business travellers, but families and shoppers are likely to find the service appealing too, not least because each passenger is permitted to take two 32kg bags on their journey as part of their included luggage allowance.
La Compagnie services from London Luton to Newark International begin on April 24. Initially flights will depart from London at 5.45pm on Monday, Wednesday, Fri and Sunday, with Thursday and Saturday services being offered at a later date. They will land at 9pm. Flights will depart Newark at 10.30pm on the same days, arriving in London at 10.30am the following morning.
The promotional launch fares of £649 per person, or £1,007 per couple, return, are only available to the first 500 customers who book through the La Compagnie website. Thereafter return fares will cost from £1,549 return.
